Every year U.S. News & World Report releases its list of the top 25 best paying jobs in America. The list is fascinating to read, if nothing else. This year, 15 of the jobs on that list are jobs in the medical field. Does that surprise you?

Most of us have heard stories, fictional or otherwise, of mothers wanting their children to grow up and be doctors primarily because of the pay. Let’s face it, being able to command a six-figure salary is a pretty enviable position of be in. Furthermore, medical professionals make good money because they sacrifice quite a bit just to get the required training.

With that said, let us talk about the U.S. News & World Report list for 2019. It is worth noting that the top 11 positions are all medical positions.

The Top Six

It is no secret that average salaries in the medical field change annually. The brain surgeon is not always going to be at the top of the list. So what is for 2019? Believe it or not, U.S. News & World Report says that anesthesiologist jobs are number one in terms of pay. The average salary in anesthesiology is $208,000. Anesthesiology’s current unemployment rate is 0.5%.

Rounding out the top six are:

  • surgeons (general)
  • oral and maxillofacial surgeons
  • obstetricians and gynecologists
  • orthodontists

Note that all the top six have a median salary of $208,000. It is not clear why the list has anesthesiology at the top, but perhaps whoever compiled it accounted for other factors like unemployment rate, number of available jobs, etc.

Other Top Paying Jobs

Remember that the top 11 jobs on the 2019 list are all medical jobs. Coming in at number seven is the physician job. Based on U.S. News & World Report’s description, it appears as though they are applying the term ‘physician’ rather broadly. They list a full range of possibilities including ER doctors, primary care doctors, and dermatologists.

What is the median salary of America’s physicians? The list says $192,930. We do know that number varies widely among the many specialties. Some physicians make considerably less while others make a bit more.

Next on the list is the prosthodontist, a medical professional who specializes in addressing dental problems. Prosthodontists earn an average of $185,150 annually. Their industry currently boasts a 0.9% unemployment rate.

The pediatrician is next in line with a median salary of $172,650. Pediatricians are specialists in medicine for the younger set. Sometimes they also work as family medicine providers as well. The current unemployment rate among pediatricians is 0.5%.

The tenth and eleventh positions belong to the dentist and nurse anesthetist respectively. However, there appears to be a problem with the list inasmuch as the nurse anesthetist position has a higher median salary despite being ranked below dentist. Dentists earn an average of $151,440 while nurse anesthetists pull in $165,120 annually.

Finally, the remaining medical positions on U.S. News & World Report top 25 list are podiatrist, pharmacist, optometrist, and medical and health services manager. Also, all 25 positions – with the exception of the medical and health services manager – offer a six-figure income. Medical and health service managers make an average of $98,350 annually.

In Summary

To summarize the 2019 list of top paying jobs in America, more than half of them are related to medicine in some way. Even if annual income is not the primary motivation for seeking a career in a medical field, it certainly is a fringe benefit that cannot be ignored.
